A Tale of Two Journeys by Dave Snyder

I was recently asked to write an article about my experience of serving as the Head Official for the US Olympic Team Trials 50K Racewalk.  The more I thought about it the more I became conflicted, proud at having received such an honor but feeling to talk about it would be bragging.  Then I thought of the 17 month journey of John Nunn to earn the right to represent his country and be a part of the contingent of United States athletes that will march into the Olympic Stadium in London this next summer.  And, my part in helping him achieve his dream.  This is the Readers Digest version of the journeys of two men whose paths joined and resulted in one of them going to the 2012 Olympic Games.

August 2010.  John, a member of the US Army High Performance Team contacts me about setting up a 20K race for him.  He needs a 1:26:00 to remain in the Army program.  The event is arranged for the UC San Diego track.  Recovering from an injury, John misses the needed time by about 2 minutes.  That would seem to be that.  I later learn John finished the 20K at the 2011 USATF Outdoor Championships nine seconds under the Army standard.

Never Land Family Fun Run

On Friday, my grandma and I went to go check into the Candy Cane Inn not too far from Disneyland. After we did that we went down to Downtown Disney to go get our numbers for the race that night. At the Expo we looked around and found some stuff we liked and then went shopping and to lunch. We had lunch at the Rainforest Cafe, I had so much fun. We then went to Studio 365 to get my hair done, it was really pretty. After all that we went back to the hotel and we rested for our big race that night. Then at 9:30pm we left the hotel with our tennis shoes and were ready to run. When we walked into Disneyland the castle was bright and beautiful. At 10:30pm the race started and we were off. We saw Pirates and behind the scenes of Disneyland. We passed Pirates of the Carribean and the Haunted Mansion. After all that we were at mile 2. At each mile they had something different. We then went through Disney's California Adventure and went to Paradise Pier which is where we ended the race. We then left and went back to the Candy Cane Inn and went to bed. The next day my mom and sister came and we went to Mimi's for dinner and after dinner my mom, Kaeli and I went to Disneyland while my grandma was resting for her 1/2 marathon the next day. We went on Star Tours, The Jungle Cruise, Indiana Jones, (Kaeli was scared), The Haunted Mansion, Winnie the Pooh and we went into the Tiki Room. Then we went back to the hotel to go to bed. The next morning we had breakfast and then went to meet grandma at mile 11. Then the next time we met grandma was at the finish line. Then we went back to the hotel. After grandma got ready we went out to lunch with Constance to a Mexican resteraunt, it was really good. After we ate we packed up and left. I had so much fun doing that race I want to do it again next year.
