Stories of adventures in racewalking by our members

Mud Run 2006
by Cindy Eggert

On Saturday, June 17th, five IER members took on a new adventure – the Marine Corp. obstacle course at Camp Pendleton. Cliff, Flo, Susan, Chris, and Cindy participated at a team named the Muddy Walkers. The course was a 10k, which took us about 2 hours to complete. In addition to running and walking, we had to maneuver a number of obstacles including, climbing over hay bales, running through tires, crawling through short tunnels while being squirted with hosed, running through fire hosed, climbing hills with water running down them, waist deep river crossings, climbing walls with mud pits on either side, and finally crawling through a mud pit right before the finish line. This was, without a doubt, one of the most fun races we have ever done! We were assisted throughout the entire race course by very good looking, and nice Marines. Our team is also appreciated that Jay and Christine came along with us and took pictures so we have proof that we did actually complete this event. We are already planning our strategy for next year’s event. Jay and Christine are planning to put together a team.

The day after the race we had sore muscles over our entire bodies. Susan, Cindy, and Flo all decided that next year they are going to be able to pull themselves up and over the walls using their own muscle strength. If you are looking for an ultra-challenging adventure, the Mud Run is for you!

Other Sports
by Dave Snyder

While we are the Inland Empire Racewalkers, many of us do other things like bike, swim, play golf and bowl.  Occasionally we find a nugget of success. Such was the case on July 20 in the Barbeque and Bowl League at Empire Lanes in Redlands when after 46 years I attained every bowlers dream - a 300 game.  Doesn't matter to me it was not in a sanctioned league (although that would have earned a plaque and a diamond ring from USBC).  It is enough to have done it one time.

Forty years ago on March 14 at Glenoaks Golf Club in Glendora (a par 3 course) I aced the 82 yard 8th hole.  Was not pretty but it went in on the first shot.  As they say in bowling it is not how it is how many.

For years I dreamed of a 300 so I could be one of few to be able to claim a hole in one and a 300 game.  Keep believing, dreams do come true.

Now if I could just get that 700 series.
